After week 2 in Pittsburgh, the Niners showed some glaring holes, ones that clearly weren't present while playing a shitty Vikings team. The Steelers came out right away looking like they did their homework in the film room. The box was stacked early to make sure that Hyde didn't set a tone for the 49ers run-game, resulting in Hyde getting POUNDED into the ground the entire first half. I think the blame for our dismal first half offensively falls on our coordinator. Kap did a decent job of opening up the field with his receivers but that didn't happen at all in the first half and most of his yards/performance came while playing from behind. The vanilla offense that pushed around the Vikings week 1, couldn't do anything against the experienced Steelers coaching staff/players until it was too late. Bruce Miller couldn't hang on to a lay-up TD pass, Hyde's fumble was awful and even Boldin dropped a gimme. Mistakes and little details doomed the 49ers offense from the start. Combine those with a porous (and childish) offensive line, and you've got yourself a week 2 loss/ass kicking.
Defensively we were put on the ropes early. Big Ben had success on 60% of third down plays, including two 40+ yard passes to Brown/Hayward-Bey. Brock is boom or bust with plays on his side of the field, Antonio Brown made almost every secondary defender look stupid during the course of the game. With zero pass-rush too, Big Ben had all-day to pick us apart.
There are some positives to take away but bottom line is that we got our asses kicked. It's on to the desert now, the first-place Cardinals await. The Cards have a stellar defense and an offense that has dropped 79 points in two games. Not going to lie, I'm a little nervous..give me some confidence, JT!
