The first check of All Star Game ballots were released Tuesday and Wednesday. The AL roster is lead by five Royals players: leading vote-getter C Salvador Perez, 3B Mike Moustakas, SS Alcides Escobar, and OFs Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon. Joining them are DH Nelson Cruz, 1B Miguel Cabrera, 2B Jose Altuve, and OF Mike Trout. Clearly, KC fans are getting out early and voting heavily for their Royals. Escobar is an interesting selection in the first All Star Game after Derek Jeter's retirement, and could be caught by Tigers SS Jose Iglesias by July.
For the NL, the Cardinals currently have four starters: C Yadier Molina, SS Jhonny Peralta, 3B Matt Carpenter, and OF Matt Holiday (who, by the way, has reached base in all 42 games so far this season). The leading vote-getter is OF Bryce Harper, who is joined by 1B Adrian Gonzalez, 2B Dee Gordon, and OF Giancarlo Stanton.
Both Missouri teams are well represented, and it makes sense when you check the standings. The Royals are 28-18 after going to the World Series last year, and the Cardinals are an ML best 30-16. The Royals and Cardinals are 1 and 2 in Power Rankings, respectively. If both teams keep it up, we could be in store for a rematch of the 1985 World Series.
Right now, I would give the edge to the AL lineup, but there is still plenty of time for things to change.
