Some very interesting developments here at Mizzou recently. Chancellor Loftin is trying to crack down on sexual assaults on and around campus. Naturally, one of the first places to regulate is Greek Life. Loftin contacted something called the Mizzou Fraternity Alumni Consortium for their suggestions on cracking down on alcohol abuse and sexual assaults in frat houses. Apparently, this Consortium is made up of a lot of older men (40+) who used to be in Mizzou frats and they are the best to consult, not the IFC or PHA made up of current students (keep in mind, they were not consulted at all in this process). A couple days ago, Chancellor Loftin sent out an invitation to his Summit on Sexual Assault & Student Safety in Fraternity Houses to be held on June 20 (in the middle of summer when not many students are here). A vague description of what some of the new policies could be are included on the invitation. TFM has a good article on all of this, including what is rumored to be the new policies. If you have the time, it's a great read and very interesting take on it: http://totalfratmove.com/mizzou-proposing-insane-rules-that-will-kill-greek-life-and-endanger-its-students/. Some of the rumors aren't terrible, like a beer only rule for fraternity parties. But the Consortium has some crazy proposals like no out-of-town fraternity formals. The kicker is a possible new rule of no female guests at fraternity houses from 10 PM - 3 AM on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays as well as during Syllabus Week and Reading Day Eve (both very popular times for frat parties here). This would essentially kill fraternities at Mizzou and force partying off-campus/underground. Again, check out the article, Fox really berates Loftin and offers suggestions for protesting. I'm not in a frat here at Mizzou, so this doesn't really apply to me, but it's still crazy that Loftin wants to eradicate the frats when they aren't the only problem in the rise of sexual assaults on and around campus.
