We're a week and a half into a new school year here at Mizzou. I came back expecting that things would be different after all of the shenanigans from last year, but I figured everyone would take the summer to hit the refresh button so we can put everything behind us. There's obviously a couple things different: donations are down somewhere between $2-6 million (depending on who you ask). Enrollment is down 2,300 from last August, including 1,400 fewer first time students. Because of that, two whole dorms shut down. Despite all of that, I think everyone started out the year ready to turn the page and get past all the stuff from last fall.
That is until this week happened. Two stories came out of Mizzou this week that make it seem like things are only getting worse. The first story involved unisex bathrooms on campus. The Missouri Students Association passed a resolution to rename all unisex restrooms to say 'toilet' because apparently unisex isn't inclusive enough..? It will cost the university about $11,600 to change the signage of all 200 single-occupancy stalls. But, since donations and enrollment is down, Mizzou doesn't have the funds to change all the signage. Moreover, how isn't 'unisex' inclusive enough? Why do we have to change our signs to say 'toilet' like we're in Europe? If I wanted this sheeet, I woulda gone to Berkeley with the Hipster. Thanks MSA!
But that's not even bad compared to this next story that broke yesterday. A rescue organization is suing researchers at the University who PURPOSELY BLINDED SIX BEAGLES AND THEN KILLED THEM AFTER THEIR PROJECT FAILED!!!!!!!!! What? Why? How? Just a great way to help your image, Mizzou. According to their research, these vets poured experimental acid into the corneas to test a treatment for ulcers. When it proved unsuccessful, they killed the dogs and kept their eyes for further research. To make matters worse, the University came out in support of the study and assured that the animals were treated humanely. Just unreal.
Making me ashamed of this university. But as long as there isn't bad coming out about the Stats Department or the Baseball team, we're chillin.
