What an interesting day it has been in College Football, and there haven't even been any games!
To start, it turns out that Steve Sarkisian is a McHone and loves his tequila. Sark was fired less than a day after he was suspended indefinitely. Word is that he was drunk during the ASU game, and then showed up drunk to a team meeting on Sunday. The LA Times had a good article earlier today detailing his days at Washington and his drinking problem (you can read it here, kinda long but definitely worth the read). I don't know if this was the final straw, but either way Sark is out in a crazy turn of events.
Around the same time, it was announced that Florida freshman Will Grier is suspended for the rest of the season for failing an NCAA administered drug test for PEDs. This is an especially touching topic for Mizzou fans because the suspension comes on the heels of a Gator victory here in Columbia. Here's the thing about NCAA drug tests though: they typically take 2-3 weeks for the results to come back. That being said, he could have been taking whatever PED it is for several weeks leading up to Saturday's win, therefore making him a cheater. That makes me question why their win doesn't get vacated. USC back in the day cheated with Reggie Bush and had to vacate their wins, so shouldn't Florida have to vacate their wins (or at least just the Mizzou win)?
Finally, sad news out of the other Columbia tonight as the Head Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier, has announced his retirement. Spurrier is one of the most recognizable and respected coaches in the nation, and its sad that this is his time to go. A little weird that he decided that mid-season is the best time to retire, but I don't blame him wanting to leave a 2-4 team.
Wishing the Head Ball Coach a Happy Retirement.
